How many days do you need for a Tanzania safari?

How many days for a safari in Tanzania: what each length gets you, the parks that fit, and when it is worth adding a day rather than a park.

The short answer

How many days you need for a safari in Tanzania depends on how much you want to see. Most first-time visitors are best served by 6–10 days on the northern circuit, like our Signature Adventure. Three to four days covers Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater. Ten days or more adds remote areas such as Ruaha, or Zanzibar.

What you can see by trip length

The trips we run at each length, with the parks they visit. Private safari prices are the guide price per person, based on 2 sharing in low season; group safaris are per seat in a shared vehicle.

1 day

One park, out from Arusha and back the same evening. The nearer parks make an easy day; the further ones make a long one.

3–4 days

Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, without the long drive to the Serengeti; or a fast 4-day group trip that does reach the Serengeti.

5–7 days

Long enough to add the Serengeti to Tarangire and the Crater, and still see each park properly rather than in passing. A good 7 day safari in Tanzania usually looks like this.

  • 6 days · group · Tarangire, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara

  • 7 days · group · Tarangire, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara

6–10 days · private · Tarangire, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro

8–10 days

The northern circuit at an unhurried pace, with three or four nights in the Serengeti, or a shorter safari with Zanzibar on the end. A 10 day safari is the length where nothing feels rushed.

Why more days is better value

  • Less driving per day. The parks are hours apart by road, and a short trip spends a larger share of its time in the vehicle between them. Each extra day goes into the parks rather than the road.
  • More time in each park. The best sightings come from waiting: at a river, by a kopje, with a sleeping cat. Three nights in one place lets you do that; one night does not.
  • A better chance of the migration. The herds follow the rain, not the calendar, and their position shifts by weeks. More nights in the right sector of the Serengeti means more chances to be there when they are.
  • Fewer, longer stays. Unpacking once for three nights is more restful than moving every morning, and you see the same park in different light.

Adding Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar

Kilimanjaro: a climb takes 6–8 days on the mountain plus an arrival day, so 7–9 days in all, by route. Climb first, then go on safari: your legs get a rest in the vehicle, and you are not carrying safari fatigue up the mountain.

Zanzibar: our Safari & Zanzibar journey runs 8–13 days and spends 4 nights on the island after the safari, which is enough to slow down without it becoming a second holiday.

Short on time?

A group safari shares the vehicle and guide with up to five other travellers on a set route and date, which keeps a short trip affordable. A day trip from Arusha shows you one park and has you back the same evening.

Questions about trip length

Yes, if three days is what you have. A 3 day safari covers Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, which between them give you elephant herds, the Crater floor and a real sense of the bush. What it can't do is the Serengeti properly: it is further out, and needs more days to be worth the journey. With four or more days, add it.

See the 3-day group safari

Possibly, but nobody can promise it. Lion, elephant and buffalo are likely: the Crater has lion at very high density and enormous buffalo numbers, and Tarangire has the largest elephant herds in northern Tanzania. Leopard is present in both but far less reliable. Rhino is the hardest: the Crater holds a small black rhino population, seen regularly but not daily. Anyone promising the Big Five in three days is guessing.

Three to four nights. Two nights gives you a glimpse; three or four lets the place resolve, and gives you the time to follow the herds or wait at a good spot. The Serengeti rewards patience more than distance covered.

The Serengeti

Not if you break it. Ten to fourteen days of pure game driving is tiring; the same length split across two ecosystems, or safari plus coast, is not. That is why our longer journeys build in a change of landscape.
