Lemosho Route

The quietest start on the mountain and the best acclimatisation of the four routes. If you're not sure which to choose, choose this one.

Overview

Lemosho starts on the far western side of the mountain, where few other climbers begin, and spends an extra day crossing the Shira Plateau before it climbs higher. That day, together with the climb-high, sleep-low day at Lava Tower, gives your body more time to adjust than any other route here.

More time to adjust is the biggest single thing that improves your chances of reaching the top, which is why this is the route we suggest first.

The trade: it costs more than a route with seven days on the mountain, with one more day of crew and park fees, and the drive to Londorossi Gate is longer. From Shira 2 on day 3 it shares the trail and camps with Machame, so the second half is busier.

Questions climbers ask about the Lemosho route

For most people, yes. The extra day crossing the Shira Plateau gives your body more time to adjust before summit night, and that does more for your chances of reaching the top than fitness does. It costs one more day of crew and park fees. If budget is tight, Machame is the fair compromise; if the summit matters most, choose Lemosho.

No: it is a day longer, and easier on your body. From Shira 2 the two routes share the same trail, with Lava Tower, the Barranco Wall, Barafu and the same summit night. The difference is that you reach that point with an extra night at altitude behind you.

No. Every route is a trek: long, steep walking at altitude, with no ropes or technical climbing. What you do need is the fitness to walk for several hours on consecutive days.

You come down with a guide, and anyone else in your group carries on with the others. Turning back is safety, not failure: the mountain will still be there, and nobody is ever pushed on against their guide's judgement.

Yes, in Arusha or Moshi. Sleeping bags, down jackets, trekking poles and more can all be hired, so you don't have to fly them in. Boots are the exception: bring your own, already broken in.

Tips are a real part of the crew's income on Kilimanjaro. We give you recommended amounts for each role in writing before you climb, so there is no guessing on the last day, and the tips go directly to each crew member.

Yes. Climb first, then go on safari or to the coast: your legs get a rest in the vehicle or on the beach, and you're not carrying safari fatigue up the mountain.
